Measuring a kitchen sink for a custom bottom grid requires the internal dimensions at the height where the grid will sit, not the sink’s overall external size. You must also record the corner radius, drain position, wall taper, bowl slope, and any features that affect the supporting feet.
A 30-inch sink does not automatically need a 30-inch grid. The stated sink size commonly includes its rim, while the usable bottom area may be considerably smaller.
Most sink bowls become narrower toward the bottom. Measuring near the upper edge can therefore produce a grid that is too large to reach its intended position.
Decide how far the grid should stand above the bowl bottom. Then measure the internal length and width at approximately the height of its outer frame.
The grid should leave a controlled gap from the sidewalls. It must be easy to insert and remove without scraping the sink, but it should not be so small that it slides during washing.
Measure front-to-back and left-to-right at several points. Do not assume that the bowl is perfectly rectangular or symmetrical.
Record:
Width near the front
Width through the drain center
Width near the rear
Length on the left
Length through the center
Length on the right
These measurements reveal tapers, curved walls, and irregular transitions that one maximum dimension would miss.
Rounded corners require an appropriate grid radius. Corners that are too square will touch the bowl walls, while overly rounded corners leave large unsupported areas.
Use a radius gauge where possible. A full-size paper or cardboard template can also document the outline. Place the template at the intended grid height and confirm that it lies flat.
A photograph can support the drawing, but it should not replace dimensions. Camera angle and lens distortion can change the apparent proportions.
Measure the drain center from two agreed reference points, normally the left and front sides of the usable grid area. State the drain-opening diameter required in the rack.
Labels such as “rear drain” and “side drain” are insufficient for custom production. A small positional error may prevent users from removing the strainer or create an awkward, off-center opening.
For double-bowl sinks, measure each bowl independently. The two drains and bowl shapes may not be mirror images.
The grid feet determine stability and distribute loads. They should sit on suitable areas of the bowl rather than steep slopes, embossed features, drainage channels, or the drain flange.
Provide the manufacturer with:

Preferred foot material
Areas where feet are prohibited
Expected cookware load
Sink surface material
Required clearance beneath the frame
Feet and side bumpers should prevent exposed stainless steel from rubbing against the sink.

Measurements should state the unit and tolerance. A sketch marked only with nominal dimensions leaves too much room for interpretation.

Place the finished sample in a production sink and verify that it does not rock or contact the walls. Add representative cookware, run water through the bowl, remove the strainer, and lift the grid several times.
Also check whether the grid can pass through the finished countertop opening. This is important for undermount installations where the countertop may overlap the sink rim.
Accurate measurement reduces sampling changes, but physical fit testing provides the final confirmation. A custom bottom grid is ready for production only when it works with the real sink, drain, and installation environment.
