304 stainless steel sink grids generally resist rust better than 201 stainless steel sink grids in wet kitchens. Both grades contain chromium and can provide useful indoor performance, but 304 usually has a higher nickel content and a stronger corrosion-resistance margin when exposed to standing water, salt, food acids, detergent, and humid conditions.
Material grade is only part of the answer. Welding quality, surface finishing, contamination control, protective feet, and cleaning practices can determine whether a sink grid develops rust-colored spots.
Chromium in stainless steel reacts with oxygen and forms a thin passive layer on the surface. This layer reduces further oxidation and can reform when it is lightly damaged and oxygen remains available.
The protection can weaken when chlorides, grease, food residue, or aggressive chemicals remain on the surface. Crevices around welds and feet are especially vulnerable because water can stay trapped there.
“Stainless” therefore means corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof.
201 stainless steel replaces part of the nickel found in 304 with manganese and nitrogen. This can reduce material cost while maintaining useful strength and formability.
It may be suitable for cost-sensitive indoor accessories that receive mild exposure and regular drying. However, its lower corrosion margin makes material processing and maintenance more critical in persistently wet or chloride-containing environments.
A 201 stainless steel grid should not be sold as identical to a 304 model. Buyers need a clear grade declaration so they can match the product to the market and price level.
304 is widely specified for kitchen hardware because it offers a practical balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and appearance. It is normally the preferred choice for a grid that remains inside a wet sink.
A 304 sink grid can still develop surface marks when:
Carbon-steel particles contaminate it
Weld discoloration is not properly treated
Salt remains around joints
Chlorine cleaner is left too long
Rusting cookware transfers iron
Protective feet trap dirty water
Good alloy selection cannot compensate for poor fabrication or neglect.
Electropolishing removes a controlled microscopic layer from the stainless steel surface. When correctly performed, it can smooth surface irregularities, remove some fabrication contamination, and improve cleanability.

A polished appearance alone cannot verify whether the material is 201 or 304.
Visual inspection and household magnet tests cannot reliably distinguish these alloys. Cold-worked stainless steel may show some magnetic response, and different grades can look nearly identical after polishing.

The strongest specification combines the appropriate stainless steel grade with clean welding, complete electropolishing, verified dimensions, intact feet, and documented inspection. For most permanently wet kitchen sink grids, 304 provides the more dependable choice.
